USS The Sullivans (DD-537)

This 1/50 scale model of USS The Sullivans contains 57,000 matchsticks and took about 350 hours to build in 2019.

Acton’s model of the destroyer USS The Sullivans pays tribute to the five Sullivan brothers who were killed in action when their ship, the light cruiser USS Juneau, was sunk by Japanese torpedoes off Guadalcanal on November 13, 1942. The five local-area boys from Waterloo, IA, had enlisted in the Navy on January 3, 1942, with the stipulation that they serve together. Although the Navy had a policy of separating siblings, that policy was not always followed precisely.

The USS The Sullivans (DD 537) is a WWII Fletcher class destroyer launched in April 1943.  It is the only United States Navy ship named for more than one person.
